Presentation

The Young European Laboratory of Theatre
is a european space for theatrical study and creation. It is made up of young actors from various theatre schools throughout Europe.
Inspired by the european theatrical heritage (including works by stage directors such as Artaud, Brook, Grotowski, Barba, and Mnouchkine), as well as by traditional asian theatre, our group aims to produce a form of universal theatre which is grounded in the very roots of the universe, total theatre for our generation.
Through this project, we endeavour to create ties between young people from all european countries, thus contributing to the development of a European union of culture, innovation, sharing and friendship.

The 2008 Project

"The European commission has stated that 2008 will be the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue"

Our project follows this idea very closely; for its first edition, the YELT has chosen to emphasize the themes of dialogue and intercultural initiative.

Throughout the month of July, we plan to take up residence at the Jacques Cartier de St Malo High School. Our hope is that our work there will result in a true collective creation, which fully reaps the benefits of the cultural diversity and multilingualism of our group.

The result of this communal experience will be the creation of a total performance , which can be performed on the street as well as on stage, and will be free of charge. The dialogue will be written entirely in an invented language, in order to fully reimpart to the body its theatrical power, to give back to words their primitive musicality, and to break the language barrier. Our creation will be inspired by the « Epic of Gilgamesh » from Mesopotamia, the very first work of literary fiction known to mankind.Malo during one week. Then, thanks to the European Francophone High School Festival networks, we will successively perform in Germany, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovania and Italy, until the end of August. The tour will end in Paris with another week of performances.

The performance will first take place in Saint-Malo during one week.
